I was thinking about this today, after speaking with one of my mentor clients – let's call her Liz. During our call today, she was reflecting on the difference that our work together had made on her business the past three months. For me, it was very humbling to be there on the other end of the phone, listening to her reflect on what our working relationship meant to her.
Liz was the one who took the very first step to change and grow her business by engaging a mentor. After each call, she walked away with, and committed to her action list. Step by step, things began to change.
I remember going home that night and sitting at my desk thinking: “Can this turn-around happen?”. “By agreeing to work with her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], am I giving her false hope?". There have been times previously, when after having my first meeting with new clients, I have decided not to move ahead and work with them.
After listening to her story, I agreed to work with her. At our first face-to-face meeting, we spoke about how we would work together, and established our guidelines for success. Our expectations were that she would do everything she committed to in our calls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I would do everything I could to support her. We agreed that if nothing had changed by the end of 2010, she would close the doors and walk away. Liz left that meeting with the first of her action steps….
As things stand now, Liz is not out of the woods completely, but three months on, she is now working in her business. She’s paid off all outstanding debts, and has started taking a wage from her business again. At times there was a sense of being overwhelmed, there was exhaustion, but still there was hope. She implemented it all, she took action and she believed in what she was doing. She didn't sit back and say, "I know this stuff already.". What little girl didn’t experience her first contact with skin care products and fragrance at the cosmetic counter? The offer of samples began in department stores. Buyers knew and recognized the unique tastes and preferences of their clientele and stocked their departments accordingly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Every city and its citizens identified with the local department store(s) and its unique design and specialties. Kaufmann’s was as much a part of Pittsburgh as the Pirates. Holmes in New Orleans, and dozens of other locally owned department stores were woven into the fabric of their towns.

At a time when there were virtually no women involved in management of industrial businesses, they were able to find their place in retail. Many women rose to buyers and department managers.
The commercial growth that department stores fomented was spectacular. The social changes were just as profound. Before the rise of the department store women were almost invisible in society. There were few places that a woman could tastefully appear in public. Department stores changed this forever. The popularity and growth of this type of shopping venue laid the ground for early feminism.
Gift wrap, home delivery and special orders were introduced by department stores. Reading rooms appeared in a number of stores. For example, if we were to measure someone’s leadership ability on a subjective scale between 0 and 10. Natural leaders may measure out, as say a 7 to start with and someone with less natural ability could measure out at a 5.
The reason people follow other people is not an accident. They follow people who they can respect as leaders and who set a great example by what they project to the world. When you as a leader consistently demonstrate that you are successful in your own endeavours, people will grow to respect you and be willing to follow you and your example. Exhibiting your willingness to lead by example and always giving your best as a leader, is a certain way to encourage people to follow you and to offer their best.
No one will follow a leader unless they can respect that leader as both a better leader than they are and as a person worth respecting, for whom they are. If you are in a leadership position, and you want to improve your effectiveness as a leader, you must stay committed to continually grow as both a leader and as a person. The more you can improve both as a leader and in every other facet of your life, the easier it will be for people to follow you and the more effective you will become. As you keep improving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the team you serve will grow to respect you more and more.
As a leader, stay focused on always supporting your team and try to add value to them wherever possible. As your followers grow to respect you as a loyal, able and supportive leader, they will give their best every day. Living through your Nurture is exhausting! Living inauthentically takes a lot of extra work. You can get really good at living your should-be/should-do life and become a great success. However, that life will leave you tired and unfulfilled. You will feel like something is missing or hold thoughts of still not knowing who you want to be when you 'grow up'.
Fear of greatness, fear of success is most often misnamed as a fear of failure. Your innermost self simply will not allow you to completely think that you are the mediocre or inept talent that your Inner Critic says you are. This higher self, soul or what I playfully call the Wizard Within knows you are born with the power and talent to achieve greatness. Greatness comes with vast responsibility. What if you couldn't handle all of that responsibility? Your life would completely change and some of that change is frightening. You may have to make public appearances, you may no longer have time to spend with your loved ones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or be pressured to stay upon the mantle of greatness by delivering even more greatness. For many,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a position of greatness is akin to living a nightmare. It is impossible to generate energy to create what you believe to be a frightening existence.

We all like to feel we are altruistic people willing to make sacrifices for others.
